Dow Introduces New Elastomer Product Line, Showcases Full Line of Silicone Elastomers for Reliability, Safety and Aesthetics

SILASTIC™ brand products for consumer, industrial, energy, and mobility applications on display at Fakuma International Trade Fair for Plastics Processing.

The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) will be showcasing its expertise in elastomer innovation, service and support at the Fakuma International Trade Fair for Plastics Processing, October 16 through 20 in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

At Exhibition Hall B2 – Booth B2-2220, Dow will showcase its expanded elastomer technology platforms and capabilities, including an industry-leading range of SILASTIC™ silicone and fluorosilicone rubber technologies.

New low-temperature-cure silicone delivers performance and processing benefits
Dow will be introducing the SILASTIC™ LTC 9400 Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) product line, a low-temperature-cure (LTC) LSR solution that enables short cure times at low temperatures and features processing benefits including improved rheology for fast low-pressure injection.

“The low-temperature cure capability of SILASTIC™ LTC 9400 Liquid Silicone Rubber creates new opportunities for part design by enabling overmolding of low-melting-point thermoplastics, actives and electrical components,” said Hans Peter Wolf, Ph.D., research and development manager for Silicone Rubber. “These LSRs also increase robustness by reducing sensitivity to temperature gradients.”

Optimized performance for competing demands
Dow also will introduce SILASTIC™ LS-4940 Fluorosilicone Rubber Base and SILASTIC™ LS-4960 Fluorosilicone Rubber Base, which were developed to provide good handling in combination with high-temperature and fluid-resistance capabilities. Suitable for molded parts requiring higher heat stability and/or improved fluid stability, these elastomers are specially designed for turbocharger hose calendering and extrusion.

In-booth demo
Highlighting the performance and processing capabilities made possible through collaboration between Dow and leading machinery manufacturers, SILASTIC™ brand MS-Series Moldable Silicones will be used with ENGEL injection molding machinery to provide ongoing in-booth demonstrations throughout the show.

A continuing commitment
SILASTIC™ brand silicone rubber, which was introduced commercially in 1945, has a 70-year history of success. SILASTIC™ silicone elastomers are known today for their effectiveness in consumer goods, electrical, industrial and other demanding applications where performance, reliability, safety and aesthetics are essential.

As part of broader investment plans to meet silicones demand growth and drive innovation, Dow recently announced new low-capital-intensity, high-return investments in its upstream and downstream silicones franchise.

One of these projects is a new installation to develop and establish Most Effective Technology (MET) for compounding High Consistency Rubber (HCR) and Fluorosilicone Rubber (FSR) at Dow’s manufacturing facility in Barry, Wales, United Kingdom. This project will improve product quality and consistency, worker safety, productivity and cost structure. This plant is expected to come online in mid-2019. Dow also announced construction of a new silicone resin plant at Dow’s existing manufacturing hub in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu, China. The new facility is expected to come online in 2021.
